About
About The Program
The Fantasticks Kids-in-the-Theater Program is an arts education initiative that sends New York City public school children to see The Fantasticks and includes additional educational programming. Music Theatre International (licensor of The Fantasticks) introduced the program in 2010 and co-developed the initiative in partnership with The Theater Center and The Department of Education. The program's success inspired The Department of Education and The Fantasticks to work together to secure funding and underwrite the program annually. Tickets are provided to the program at a 67% discount and educational programming is provided to the kids free of charge.
One of theatre's most iconic shows, The Fantasticks is the world's longest running musical, running for over 50 years in Manhattan - over 3000 performances in its current home at The Jerry Orbach Theater. The score, which includes classics "Try to Remember", "They Were You" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain" is as timeless as the story - a funny version of Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending, appropriate and accessible to children as well as young adults. Feedback
What have the schools said?
"Let me begin by saying 'Thank you' for the opportunity you afforded our students
at PS 84. This was an opportunity our students would not have otherwise had as the expense is too great for many of our families. The students enjoyed it very much. Programs such as this should continue as they open up doors for children like ours. I cannot say enough about this great opportunity we had with our students."
Mary A. Acosta
Asst. Principal, PS 84M
The Lillian Weber School
"Thank you so much for having the Halsey students attend The Fantasticks last week. The kids had SO much fun and were so excited to have the opportunity to meet some of the cast. It was a wonderful experience for them. Thanks again!"
Ms. Sara Shikowitz
Choral Director, J.H.S. 157
"The ongoing commitment of THE FANTASTICKS producers to provide free and engaging theater experiences for NYC public school students is truly inspiring. This program opens new artistic and cultural doors for many of our students who will thus experience their first professional theatrical production. With the support it deserves, this program will make great strides in theater equity and accessibility for youth and sends a message that theater literacy matters."
